    FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (Election Judge Service)

    What is an Election Judge?

    Election Judges assist voters on Election Day.  Election Judges are selected from registered Maryland voters who have volunteered.

     

    What are the hours of an Election Judge?

    Chief and Voting Operation Election Judges report to their assigned voting precincts at 6:00 am. Closing Election Judges report at 6:30 pm. The precincts close at 8:00 pm and Judges will be dismissed by the Chief Judges once all closing duties and documentation have been completed.

     

    What are the responsibilities of an Election Judge?

    • Uphold integrity of elections
    • Set up the polling place for voters
    • Check-in voters
    • Carry out Provisional Voting procedures
    • Assist voters with the voting machines
    • Assist voters as directed by the Chief Judge

     

    What training is required?

    All Election Judges are required to take a training class.  The training classes vary in length of time by position.

     

    Are Election Judges paid?

    Yes, for attending training and Election Day service.

                 

    What are the requirements to be an Election Judge?

    • You must be registered to vote in Maryland
    • You must be able to read, write and speak the English Language
    • Complete an "Election Judge Questionnaire" and mail/fax it to the Board of Elections
    • Successfully complete training
